Following from the wonderful preparation that the Prep Year provides, the children begin in Class 1 with a rose ceremony, welcoming each child into the next phase of their education. Their Class Teacher gives them a warm welcome as a beginning of many years together. Unique to Steiner Education is the Class Teacher period where the teacher stays with the Class through the Primary years. This results in strong relationships with both students and parents and helps alleviate anxieties about having a new teacher each year. It also has a positive impact on the child's moral development.
Content is brought in an imaginative way through story, verse, modelling and song engaging the children in the arts: music, painting, drawing, modelling, recitation and drama.
From Class 1 to 6 the children are also immersed in the histories and mythologies of many of the great civilisations on Earth. From Fairy Tales and Celtic Myths in the early years through to the Old Testament Stories, Norse Myths, the Ramayana, Ancient Persia, Mesopotamia and Egypt, to the Greek and Roman civilizations in Classes 5 and 6.
As such, the students gain an understanding and appreciation of various cultures from all over the world.
Working in this way with the Early Childhood and Primary School prepares the students for the advanced academic work in the High School.
“Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings
who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility—these three forces are the very nerve of education.”
